By: Staff ![]() Music is an industry that is always rapidly evolving. The music of today sounds drastically different to the music of a decade ago, and even more different than the music that defined two decades ago. One can usually listen to a song and accurately pinpoint the period of time that the song was released. As the current decade comes to a close, several trends have emerged in the music industry. These trends have the potential to become extremely common, and could define the next decade of music. What exactly are these trends, and how will they affect the music of the next decade. Here’s five music trends to watch as we enter the new decade. Mumble Rap One rising trend in the rap and hip-hop industry is the emergence of mumble rappers. While traditional hip-hop fans might not be fully behind the trend yet, it is still gaining a lot of steam. Fans have slowly become more and more interested in recent years, resulting in a decent following for the genre. If things continue, this trend may be one of the most defining things in the hip-hop and rap industries during the next decade. It will be interesting to see how this kind of music evolves, and what changes it will bring to the music industry as a whole. Genre Crossover One major trend that is popping up in the music industry is the crossover of genres. Certain popular songs have become extremely unique since they combine two genres that seemingly have nothing to do with each other. No example is more prevalent right now than Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”. The song combines elements of country music with aspects of hip-hop and rap, creating an interesting blend that you wouldn’t expect to ever hear. The combination allows the song to appeal to multiple fanbases, allowing the song to reach many people. After the song’s massive success it’s not unreasonable to assume that other artists will branch out in an attempt to combine multiple genres. Big Time Collaborations One of the biggest things going on in the music industry is big time collaborations between the superstars of the industry. Collaborations are a great thing in the music industry, as it allows artists to tap into other stars’ fanbases. In addition, big time collaborations always seem to produce some amazing results as talented musicians work together to produce a quality product. When two superstars sit down and work on a song together, the end result is almost guaranteed to be a massive hit based off the starpower alone. That’s why features and big time collaborations will make up the majority of the hits of the next decade. Controversial Stars One of the biggest things going on in the music industry is big time collaborations between the superstars of the industry. Collaborations are a great thing in the music industry, as it allows artists to tap into other stars’ fanbases. In addition, big time collaborations always seem to produce some amazing results as talented musicians work together to produce a quality product. That’s why features and big time collaborations will make up the majority of the hits of the next decade. New Genres It seems that every decade brings about a new genre of music that people never really listened to before, and this decade will likely be no different. Genres like dubstep and EDM have really taken on a new life recently, hinting that more genres may enter the industry. There’s no real tell as to what new genres may emerge during this decade, but there is a high likelihood that at least one new genre will gain popularity. Music charts are typically dominated by traditional genres such as pop, country, and hip hop, so having a new genre emerge will be a great change of pace. Maybe we will start to see the rise of christian rappers, alternative hip-hop, or some other funky new genre?
