Five years into running her own successful consulting agency, Media Strategist Emily Goulding took to LinkedIn to offer her protips on turning your side hustle into a lucrative business.

"My business has enabled me to live in New York, Los Angeles, and even Sao Paulo, Brazil all while carving out the time and money to start a family and eventually fund my own maternity leave.

I did this while staying true to my passions for public interest media and education, and I've never had to advertise," Goulding writes.   Read on for 3 pro-tips to master your life as a freelancer.

Be Honest

How much money do you need to survive? What is the thing you are most passionate about? These are the questions you should be asking as you prepare to enter the world of self-employment.
"You have to be honest about what your best services are, what scope of work you can agree to in which time frame, what types of environments you work best in, what types of communications style you prefer. Every element of your business - from marketing to product to invoices - has to have a clear and logical flow," Goulding explains.

Stay Focused

"You’ll have high highs, and low lows," but it's keeping your core income flowing from your core skills you'll have both  the peace of mind and financial security you need to hone and perfect your business, Goulding explains.

Find the side hustles where you thrive and use that revenue to support yourself. Having synergy between your side hustle and your business also offers you peace of mind and real life skills you can apply to your biz.

Cast a Wide Networking Net

Now that you've gotten honest with yourself and honed in on your plans, it's now time to tap in to your network to let them know what you're doing, and announce your services.

"If you’ve developed a rich professional network, you never know who your next client connection will be! It might be who you think, but then again it might not," Goulding writes.

From your alumni network to your Facebook friends, it's extremely important to remember, your network is everything. Grab coffee or schedule catch-up calls with both people within and outside of your field.
